May Day Play Day - Weekly Theme

Today is May Day, a day we celebrate spring with flowers, dancing, and singing. This time of year we begin to play more outside with activities such as hiking, running, cycling, even yoga.

Bowspring invites us to play, to lighten up, to become more bouncy and childlike. Join us in class as we walk, run, hop, pulse in our poses, and turn upside down with curvy Bowspring alignment. And if you're up for it, hike with us after class on nearby trails on Tuesday and Thursday.

Come play for the sheer delight of it!

All Parts Working Together - Weekly Theme

For a bird to fly, all the wing feathers work in harmony together. And for us as humans to move efficiently, all of our body parts need to work together.

For our ribcage to fully expand, our hands, arms, and shoulders (what we sometimes refer to as our wings) must effectively engage. We create an even tone in all parts of our wings, from our fingers to our shoulders.

With all parts working together we have more power to move, to act, to do what needs to be done.

Thanks to Cyndy for this beautiful photo!

Dig In - Weekly Theme

When we align we first expand our ribcage and then we root down into the earth; we "dig in." We root in order to rise.

Mastery of any subject requires committed regular practice. We dig in to our Bowspring practice for the long haul, and our practice becomes easier over time.

In honor of Earth Day we'll practice digging in to the earth. We'll dig deep with the roots of our feet and legs to build strength and stamina for the ups and downs of life. We'll dig in to rise higher.

Keeping Your Balance - Weekly Theme

To experience life to the fullest we keep moving. In our yoga practice we keep evolving. Bowspring is an evolution of yoga applying our increasing knowledge of the human body.

Bowspring works to return the natural curves by balancing the muscles and connective tissue on the back side of the body with the front. One way we do this is by moving, pulsing in the poses, for Bowspring is a dynamic practice. The pedaling action of digging the forefoot down and forward and dragging the heel back and up creates even muscular tone from the feet up through the legs and hips.

Our one-leg balance poses not only balance the left and right sides of the body but also the back and front sides through the dig-drag actions of the feet and pulsing, or moving, in the poses.

Come balance with us this week!

The Art of Flying - Weekly Theme

Spreading our wings, our hands, arms, and shoulders, is a physical expression of lightheartedness.

From the lightheartedness in the heart, the wings move forward and up. We curl our fingers in toward the hollows of the palm initiating even tone from the base of the palms into the hollows of the underarms.

We spread our wings, this physical expression of joy, amidst the difficulties of life. We keep our sense of humor as we experience the challenges of this practice.

See you in class!
